Change Work Item type

A Document can be configured to contain multiple Work Item types (see Multiple Work Item Types), and types may be added to a Document at any time. When multiple types are configured in the Work Item Presentation, then any Work Item type in the Document can be changed to any other configured type. For example, a Document might initially be configured to contain only Software Requirement type items. Later, it may be decided that the same Document should also contain System Requirement type items, and the Document configuration changed to include that type. Then, some existing Software Requirement items might be identified as actually being system requirements, and those items changed to the System Requirement type.

The change can be made either in the Document, or in the Work Item Editor (see figure below). Note that when changed to another type, a Work Item displays the fields and other properties that are configured for that type in the Work Item Presentation dialog box.

Warning:

The Work Item Link Rules in the project configuration are not checked when a Work Item's type is changed. If the changed Work Item has linked Work Items, the links should be checked to ensure that the link roles are still valid for the item's new type. Also, if the item has custom fields, it is possible that some custom field values might be converted during type change, depending on the configuration of the target type.
