What is Work Instructions Authoring?

Work Instructions Authoring is used to create instructions for workers on the shop floor. It lets you allocate production elements such as products (parts) defined in a manufacturing bill of materials (MBOM) to processes and operations. It also lets you write instructions and assign visual illustrations to those processes and operations. Work Instructions Authoring is designed for engineer-to-order (ETO) domains, with a focus on the aerospace and defense industries.

Work Instructions Authoring uses structures that are contained in an existing or new work package.

  • A product structure that consists of parts that make up the physical elements needed to assemble the product.

  • A process structure that contains processes and operations that define the assembly process.

  • Optionally, a plant structure that reflects a manufacturing plant that consists of work areas, stations, and resources, such as jigs and fixtures.

Once the work package is defined, you can work in two different modes to author your work instructions.

  • In planning mode, you can author a process and review any products and resources assigned to it.

  • In work instructions mode, you can define instructions for workers on the shop floor about how to assemble a product.
